Heceta Head Lighthouse was named after a Protégées explorer Don Bruno de Heceta who in 1775 embarked on a secret voyage for the Queen of Spain and sailed under the flag of Spain.

Heceta Head Lighthouse and Heceta House; A Queen Ann’s style assistant keepers quarters is on the National Register of Historic places. Heceta House is a Bed and Breakfast so if you dreamed of spending the night at a lighthouse you can stay in one of the fabulous rooms ranging from $224 - $315.

The site for Haceta Head Lighthouse was purchased in 1889 then on March 30, 1894, Andrew Hald, who was Heceta Head’s first principal keeper, lighted the light for the first time. The light stands 205 feet above sea level and visible for over 21 miles the lens is a British made lens.

One thousand barrels of blasting powder were required to create a flat spot on the rocky mountainside to build the Lighthouse and adjacent buildings. As you travel north on Highway 101 you can see Haceta Head Lighthouse nestled in the side of the hill just one half mile north of the Sea Lion Caves.

Travel Directions: Heceta Head Lighthouse is located on Highway 101 on the Central Oregon Coast, halfway between the towns of Florence and Yachats.
It is about 12 miles north of Florence on Highway 101 and about 1/2 mile north of the Sea Lion Caves. Look for the sign to exit Highway 101 to Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint around milepost 178.
There is a parking area with a minimal parking fee. The parking fee is set up on the honor system (a machine you deposit your money in gives you a receipt you then place visibly on the dash of your vehicle).
After you park there is about a half-mile walk up the hill to the lighthouse. I did not notice much difference in the temperature and weather from the parking area to the lighthouse so you can pretty much determine the clothing needed from the parking area.
