Conserving and
Ejoying Nature

Conservation includes the defense of animal and plant species and their natural habitats from destruction or extinction as a result of disasters or damage due to human activity. Climate change, volcanic eruptions, pollution, over-development, and resource extraction projects all threaten to destroy habitats and endanger the survival of many species of animals and plants around the world. At the very least their survival is essential if future generations of people are going to be able to enjoy observing and interacting with nature. Animal and plant extinctions also have a negative effect on the entire ecosystem, leading to food shortages, soil erosion, the growth of deserts, and other problems that can be felt by people around the world. Teaching people the value of conservation is one way to help mitigate or even reverse the damage inflicted upon the environment by humans. Another way is to build interest in the environment and the animals that live in the wild. Bird watching, for example, helps people appreciate the beauty and importance of birds, as well as the habitats that they depend on.
